The Republic of Indonesia (RI), commonly referred to as Indonesia, is a Southeast Asian nation near the equator that is sandwiched between the Pacific and Indian Oceans as well as the Asian and Australian continents. Indonesia is also known as "Nusantara" (archipelago in between) since it is situated between two continents and two oceans. Indonesia is the world's largest archipelagic nation, with 17,508 islands. Despite not being a recognized Islamic state, Indonesia is the world's most populated country with 222 million inhabitants in 2006, making it the country with the greatest Muslim population.
